The site lies within the historic town walls of Carrickfergus, an area of considerable archaeological significance, and c. 150m north-west of Carrickfergus Castle itself. A total of 21 known archaeological sites lie within a 2km radius of the site. The investigations at No. 5 Governors Place, Carrickfergus, involved the excavation of five small trenches and monitoring of piling work in these trenches.
Wall foundations for No. 5 were located in two trenches, while party wall foundations between Nos 5 and 6 were found in one trench, dating to the mid- to late 19th century with 20th-century modifications.
Nothing of archaeological significance was located in any of the trenches, although it is interesting to note that a number of marine shells and some marine sediment were located at the bottom of a trench located adjacent to the carpark (situated on reclaimed land). This suggests that the frontage of 5–7 Governors Place lies close to the original harbour wall.
