A programme of underwater assessment was carried out in December 2007 at the site of a number of river crossings associated with the Wicklow water supply scheme, Co. Wicklow. Desktop analysis of the historical, archaeological and cartographic sources relating to the proposed crossing points noted that there were no known archaeological monuments in the vicinity of any of the crossing points. The nearest RMP site was WI025–001, situated over 100m to the south-west of the crossings.
Crossing point 1 was situated upstream of Nun’s Cross Bridge. It was a narrow and shallow stretch of the river with no visible archaeological material. Crossing point 2 was a section of dry river overflow, also with no visible archaeological material. Crossing 3 was located across a small tributary of the Vartry River. The stream was shallow and rocky with no visible archaeological material. The final crossing point was across a section of recently regraded and landscaped riverbed. There was no visible archaeological material noted in this area. Based on the results of the overall assessment, it appeared that there were no visible archaeological materials or features in the development zone.
