Monitoring was undertaken on road realignment works along the existing L5050 in the townland of Newcastle Middle, on the western approach to Newcastle village, Co. Wicklow. The total length of the new road and footpath is 110m. The width of excavation to facilitate construction was a minimum of 3m and a maximum of 5m from the edge of the existing road. The ground was reduced by between 1.5m and 3.5m along the southern edge of the ring work or motte associated with Newcastle Castle. No inclusions were identified in the excavated soils and it is therefore unlikely that they were a result of disturbance caused to other cultural deposits. No other features or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during monitoring.
