Pre-development testing was undertaken at the site of a proposed private residential development at Killegar, Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow. To the north of the site are ecclesiastical remains, including a church and graveyard, ecclesiastical enclosure, cross slabs and crosses (WI003–028).
Fifteen test-trenches, 2m wide and totalling an overall length of 499m, were excavated. A north-west/south-east-oriented trench was excavated along almost the entire length of the proposed access road. Six shorter trenches were excavated to the east and west of this trench, three on each side. Five trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed house, which is located in the south-eastern part of the field. Four of these were excavated along the perimeter, with a north-west/south-east-oriented trench dug through the centre. A further three trenches were excavated to the south-west of the footprint of the development.
A small possible pit was noted in the northern part of Trench 1 along the line of the proposed access road. A probable hearth was identified in Trench 10, within the footprint of the house.
