Testing was undertaken at the location of the proposed Killegar Reservoir and along sections of an associated pipeline, prior to the construction of the Enniskerry water supply scheme. Due to the close proximity of the proposed reservoir at Killegar to sites WI003–028 and WI003–029, a geophysical survey was also carried out at this site (J.M. Leigh Surveys, 06R0207). The survey revealed some possible archaeological anomalies on site. This, coupled with the close proximity of known sites, led to the testing recommendations. Testing was also recommended along the route of the pipeline where it passed through the constraint of WI003–032 (a ruined church), WI003–031 (a monastery site) and WI003–030 (an earthwork site).
Test-trenching at Killegar Reservoir commenced on 4 April 2007 and lasted for two days. This was carried out using a mechanical excavator with a flat toothless bucket. A total of fifteen trenches were mechanically investigated across the test area. Nothing of archaeological significance was discovered at the proposed reservoir site.
Due to the logistical difficulties of carrying out testing on roadways, testing was carried out at the three RMP sites during site investigations over a period of two weeks (from 19 March 2007). Two trenches were excavated within the roadway where the proposed pipeline route passed WI003–032, WI003–031 and WI003–030. Nothing of archaeological significance was discovered during testing.
