Trial testing was carried out in October 2007 prior to the construction of a new residential development just outside the town of Enniscorthy. A total of 90 trenches were opened over four fields.
Two burnt spreads and a burnt mound were found during testing. The two burnt spreads contained charcoal and heat-shattered stone. The burnt mound comprised a dark spread of charcoal and fire-cracked stone.
Before trial testing took place the development area was considered to be of high archaeological potential, given its close proximity to the historic Anglo-Norman town of Enniscorthy, Vinegar Hill and Clonhasten House. However, trial testing revealed no finds or features relating to these periods. It was recommended that the two burnt spreads and burnt mound be fully excavated before construction work on the site begins.
