Monitoring of topsoil-stripping for a residential house was carried out on 11 November 2007 at Churchtown, Hook Head, Co. Wexford. The development consisted of a 2-acre greenfield site, of which approximately 1 acre was stripped of topsoil by a mechanical excavator using a toothless bucket. Monitoring was deemed necessary as the site is located beside a church and graveyard of Early Christian origin. Test excavation had been undertaken by Daniel Noonan (04E1298) but had not uncovered anything of an archaeological interest. The same licence was transferred to facilitate monitoring. All areas to be developed were stripped to a level of subsoil (0.4m). No medieval or modern cuts into the subsoil were present. All finds were post-medieval or modern in date.
