Testing was carried out as part of an archaeological mitigation programme associated with the N6 Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway. The site was identified during testing undertaken by Yvonne Whitty, IAC Ltd, in August 2005 (A016/029). The site was excavated in April 2006. An excavation area measuring 10m by 10m was opened.
The site consisted of a single pit, measuring 2.25m long, 1.1m wide and c. 0.52m deep, which contained four fills. The function of this feature is unknown, particularly as it occurs in isolation and there were no diagnostic finds from the site.
This work was funded by Westmeath County Council and the National Roads Authority.
