Testing was carried out as part of an archaeological mitigation programme associated with the N6 Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway. The site was identified during testing undertaken by Patricia Lynch, IAC Ltd, in August 2005 (A016/029).
The site was excavated in March 2006. An excavation area measuring 18m by 18m was opened. The site consisted of a series of burnt spreads. Two of the spreads comprised irregular thin layers of heat-affected stones and charcoal-rich soil. The first burnt spread consisted mainly of orange-coloured heat-affected stones which partially overlay the second spread, which was richer in charcoal and somewhat less stony. It is likely that these contexts represent a burnt mound or burnt spread site of perhaps only a few uses. No pits, troughs or other cut features were identified, suggesting that either they were outside of the area of excavation or that some sort of vessel was used instead of a trough. No finds were recovered over the course of the excavation.
This work was funded by Westmeath County Council and the National Roads Authority.

Editor’s note: Although excavated during 2006, the report on this site arrived too late for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
