Four trenches tested this site in the centre of Mullingar close to the west bank of the River Brosna prior to redevelopment. There may have been a ford at the point where Pearse Street crosses the Brosna. The stratigraphy was consistent in four trenches, comprising 0.7–1m of redeposited stone, brick and mortar. Underneath lay hard-packed black silt clay that did not vary in texture through its depth. The black clay may represent a layer of garden soil. No early artefacts were recovered and the quantity of post-medieval artefacts was very small.
