An excavation was carried out at WM027–070, Kinnegad Ringfort, at Kinnegad townland, Co. Westmeath. The development encompassed the site of WM027–070 and archaeological assessment of the feature was required. The programme of topsoil-stripping concluded that the feature was indeed a ringfort. The programme of stripping noted that there was a considerable depth of redeposited boulder clay overlying the site, masking its original topography and situation. A very well defined enclosing ditch was recorded on three sides of the monument. The presence of a significant deposit of alluvial clay indicated that the fourth side was defined by either a small lake or a river. A number of internal features were noted at the site. These included a small pit-type feature which contained oxidised clay and charcoal and another pit feature which contained charcoal and burnt bone. At the time of the initial cleaning there was no evidence for internal structures. The site is currently the subject of a full-scale excavation.
