Testing was carried out as part of an archaeological mitigation programme associated with the N6 Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway. The site was identified during testing undertaken by Patricia Lynch, IAC Ltd, in July 2005 (A016/029). The site was excavated in March 2006. The excavation covered three areas: Area A measuring 10m by 10m; Area B measuring 10m by 10m; Area C measuring 5m by 5m.
The site comprised a single large pit, measuring 1.65m by 1.3m by 0.23m deep. The fills of the pit were indicative of debris from hazelnut roasting. No other features were identified close to the pit, but, as the feature was located close to the limits of the CPO, it is possible that associated features may be located to the north and north-east, therefore outside the CPO.
This work was funded by Westmeath County Council and the National Roads Authority.
Editor’s note: Although excavated during 2006, the report on this site arrived too late for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
