2007:1870 - ATHLONE: 26 The Gardens, Court Devilish, Westmeath

The grant of planning for the construction of a rear extension to a dwelling required that all associated ground-reduction works be monitored. The site is situated within the zone of archaeological potential established for Athlone and inside the line of the medieval(?) and later 17th-century town wall, parts of which are still extant to the north and north-east of the site. The closest extant wall remains are c. 25m from the subject development area. All site preparation/general ground-reduction works associated with the development were monitored. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered during the course of such work.
