The work was completed in response to a planning condition. The proposed development is situated to the east of the centre of the city of Waterford and lies within the zone of archaeological potential for Waterford city, WA009–005. The site was stripped of concrete using a mini-excavator between 12 and 14 June 2007. On 15 June the site level was lowered by c. 0.3m. A 1m-wide trench was dug around the perimeter of the site to a depth of a further 0.15m. This was to facilitate ancillary works. However, even at this depth of 0.55m, this constituted ‘made-up’ ground and the pipes related to the existing building’s sewage system were also noted. No archaeological features or finds were identified.
