In advance of the re-alignment of the airport road, Waterford, Phase 3, for Waterford County Council, test-trenches were excavated on the centre-line of the road in four areas, chosen following an archaeological assessment and geophysical survey (Earthsound 07). Archaeological features were encountered in the townland of Killure. Areas of heat-shattered stones were exposed on either side of a stream. These areas were highlighted for further investigation.
South of the crossroads in the townland of Monamintra, a Bronze Age burial urn was discovered. This collared urn contained the cremated remains of at least two individuals, one of which was a juvenile (F. Smith pers. comm.). A cluster of small features, which included some evidence of burning, post-holes and linear features, was exposed in the vicinity of the urn. Further investigation was recommended.
Near the southern end of the area under investigation a small bowl furnace was excavated. It contained small amounts of slag. No flue survived. An area around this feature was highlighted for further investigation. The licence was transferred to D. Lalonde of Dan Noonan & Co. to execute the excavation phase (see Nos 1832–3 above).
