This site was excavated as part of the archaeological resolution of the route of the N7 Castletown–Nenagh road scheme.
A burnt mound was present in the south-west of the site, close to a functioning well. The mound measured 9.1m (north-west/south-east) by 9m and 0.2m deep. A smaller burnt mound was found to the east of the site, measuring 9.5m (east–west) by 5m and 0.25m deep. Beneath this was an oval pit measuring 2.66m (east–west) by 1.98m and 0.35m deep. This pit contained burnt-mound material and, although upslope from the present water-table, may have served as a trough. To the north-east of the site were three pits in close proximity. Furthest to the north was a sub-oval pit measuring 1.08m (east–west) by 0.7m and 0.2m deep. This contained a single fill of grey sandy silt with occasional charcoal flecks. Adjacent to the south-east was a subrectangular pit with a very regular cut, vertical sides and a flat base. This pit measured 1.87m (north-west/south-east) by 1.02m by 0.14m deep. The lower fill was composed of burnt-mound material and the upper fill was a grey silty sand. The base consisted of heavily oxidised clay and it may have been used as a roasting pit associated with the nearby burnt mounds. An oblong pit was located to the south-west measuring 2.04m (north-west/south-east) by 1.08m and 0.41m deep. This contained two fills; the lower was a mottled grey/brown sandy silt with frequent charcoal chunks and angular stones. No finds were recovered from this site. The features on Tinderry 1 are considered to be contemporary with the heat-shattered stone and burnt-material deposits in the adjacent site, Timoney 1 (see No. 1730 above).
