Phase 1 route testing of the N7 Castletown to Nenagh road improvement scheme identified a possible wooden trackway in the bog – a 70m linear trend of cut tree trunks and branches. The site potentially seemed to be related to the known trackway TI018–003 located 340m away to the south. Phase 2 investigations during September 2007 showed that this part of the bog had been completely mechanically excavated and redeposited in recent years. The wood was natural bogwood, which had been cut by the machines and was not of archaeological significance.
The archaeological works were funded by the clients, Laois County Council and the National Roads Authority.
