One test-trench was opened on the imprint of an extension to the rear of a building fronting Main Street, Fethard. The site, which is within the medieval town of Fethard, is 35m north of the town wall. The findings from the test-trench indicated the possible presence of archaeological deposits at 0.56m below ground level. The upper 0.5m comprised concrete and underlying topsoil. Underlying the garden soil-like deposit there was a dark-greyish-brown moderate-grained sandy clay with traces of yellow mottling. Underlying this deposition and extending to the natural deposition, there was a sticky dark-grey sandy clay with yellow mottling. Of soft consistency and moderate-grained, it contained occasional pieces of crushed charcoal and some pebble inclusions. It had a slight organic smell. Having a maximum thickness of 0.4m, it extended to the base of the trench. The foundation design was altered to ensure the preservation in situ of the archaeological layers.
