Monitoring of topsoil-stripping for the M7 Castletown–Nenagh NRA road scheme uncovered a burnt spread in the townland of Derrymore. Excavation of the site took place in November/
December 2007.
The site consisted of a burnt spread, one trough, two pits, one structure and a well. The burnt spread measured c. 22m by 14m and c. 0.15m deep. The trough was subcircular in plan and measured c. 1.4m in diameter. An oval pit c. 1m from the trough measured 6.5m by 5m and 0.4m deep, and probably acted as a well, as it filled with water during the excavation. This would have provided a useful water source for the activity in the trough. Situated c. 0.5m north of the well was a rectangular structure comprised of six post-holes and measuring 2m by 1.3m. The south-west and north-west corners of the structure comprised one larger inclined post-hole and one smaller vertical post-hole, suggesting a lean-to structure which may have functioned as a work station, with the slanted roof opening towards the well.
One flint scraper and an assortment of chert debitage were found in the burnt spread.
