Phase 2 excavations along 17.1km (Contact 1) of the 35km N7 Castletown to Nenagh (Derrinsallagh to Ballintotty) national road scheme were commissioned by Laois County Council and the National Roads Authority. Contract 1 comprises the western half of the scheme and runs from Clashnevin to Castelroan, passing along the Tipperary North and Offaly county border regions. Six areas of archaeology were uncovered during Contract 1 trial-trench testing. Derrycarney 1, Area 3.1, was tested under licence E3372 (see No. 1692 below) in 2007.
The site was stripped by a machine with a toothless bucket and then manually cleaned. Four irregular features with a single organic fill and a spread were located in the north-western area of the site. The irregular features all appeared to be natural in origin, possibly tree boles. The spread probably represented a naturally occurring layer. A single pit was found in the north-eastern area of the site. It was c. 1.6m in length, 0.86m in width and 0.15m in depth, regular in shape with a concave profile. It contained a single organic fill. No archaeological finds were recovered from this fill. In general it appears that this pit from the north-eastern part of the site was the only archaeological feature at the site.
