Three trenches were opened on the imprint of areas which will be disturbed as part of the construction of a mixed development at Nos 39–40 William Street. Situated within the zone of archaeological potential for Clonmel town, the site is c. 55m north of the projected line of the town wall. Two distinct layers of infill were revealed overlying the natural disposition. Both of these deposits contained modern pottery, with the earliest ceramic in the upper layer dating to the mid-19th century, whilst some sherds of post-medieval pottery were recorded in the lower layer of infill.
