Limited groundworks were monitored as part of advance works on the embankments’ contract on the River Suir (Clonmel West) flood relief scheme. Works were located on the south side of the River Suir and away from the medieval town or any other archaeological monument.
Four areas of groundworks were monitored during this part of the scheme. These were the Convent School area, the Old Bridge area, Raheen Road and Green Lane. No artefacts dating earlier than the 19th century were found at any of these locations. At the Convent School site a late Victorian culvert was revealed at the western end of the field, apart from which nothing of archaeological provenance was found.
Modern infill/dumping was recorded at a number of locations, especially the Old Bridge and Green Lane. This may have been a deliberate course of action in an attempt to alleviate flooding in these areas through the raising and consolidation of the ground surface.
