An excavation was undertaken within the grounds of St Patrick’s Hospital following the discovery of one articulated human skeleton by building contractors during construction of an extension to the buildings in the grounds of the hospital. The contractor ceased works immediately and informed the relevant authorities. It was decided the find was of an archaeological nature and an excavation ensued. The excavation uncovered 45 skeletons, of which 21 were adults, thirteen juveniles and eleven infants. All of the skeletons were excavated and removed for further analysis. It is strongly considered the skeletons are associated with an unmarked graveyard within the grounds of St Patrick’s Hospital, which was formerly Cashel Workhouse, built in 1839–1840.
