Cashel Town Council constructed an extension to a house at No. 8 Moor Lane. The development was sited within the zone of archaeological potential of Cashel town and bordered on three sides by residential properties and on the fourth by Moor Lane, which is known locally as Dominic Street. The development involved surface stripping and foundation excavation. The extension encompassed an area of 4.5m2. Requirement for monitoring of groundworks had been identified as part of the construction schedule. In the event, the commencement date of groundworks had not been communicated to the archaeologist and groundworks, inclusive of foundation trenches and erection of a plinth, had occurred before it was brought to the attention of the archaeologist. The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government were informed. This process culminated in amendment of archaeological inputs to that of test excavation while all construction works temporarily ceased.
The test excavation was undertaken on 6 November 2007 and 41 artefacts were recovered from both the test excavation and the offsite soil inspection. While artefacts of heritage value (post-medieval) were recovered, nothing definitively medieval was recovered. There was no evidence for remains of subsurface archaeological structures. This was possibly a consequence of soil truncation from more recent developments.
