Archaeological investigation in advance of the N7 Nenagh to Limerick high-quality dual carriageway road project at Carrigatogher (Ryan) between 29 August and 29 September 2006 revealed c. 50% of a large fulacht fiadh within the CPO. The available portion of this spread measured 12m (north–south) by 15m, and was c. 0.6m deep. The spread consisted of heat-shattered sandstone and limestone and varying concentrations of charcoal in a silty clay soil. A small group of associated pits and a possible trough were located c. 5m to the north-east of the spread. No finds were recovered from this excavation.
Editor’s note: Although excavated during 2006, the report on this site arrived too late for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
