This site was identified during testing along the route of the proposed N7 Castletown to Nenagh road improvement scheme. Excavation was begun in October 2007 and will continue into 2008.
The enclosure comprises a circular ditch enclosing an area 39m by 37m. The ditch measures 1.9m wide and 1.3m deep with a flat base. The ditch fill contains animal bone and some charcoal. Close to 100 post-holes, stake-holes and pits have been excavated within the interior; finds include three sherds of prehistoric pottery (probably Bronze Age) and some stuck flint. A medieval iron axe was discovered just outside the enclosure ditch. At this time, it seems unlikely that the artefact is associated with this enclosure but may well be connected to one of the later enclosures within the general area of Camlin.
The enclosure is just one of three to be found in the immediate area; the others consist of a ringfort and a sub-oval enclosure on the site of Camlin 3 (see No. 1598 above). Both are currently undergoing excavation.
