Pre-development testing was carried out on 17 July 2007 at a site in Carrowmore, Co. Sligo. The proposed development, which consisted of the construction of a single-storey extension to the side and rear of an existing dwelling house constructed in the 1960s, in an area measuring 14m by 4.8–5.5m, was located within the archaeological constraint for the Carrowmore archaeological complex. Carrowmore 4 (SL014–209(06)) was located 55m to the west, while Carrowmore 13 (SL014–209(08)) was located 60m to the east-north-east.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of two trenches which measured 5.7m and 13.4m long, 0.9–1.05m wide and 0.65–0.9m deep. Below the topsoil was orange/grey/brown loose sandy loam, above loose grey sand and gravel. The topsoil contained three sherds of modern pottery, modern glass fragments, one red-brick fragment and part of a plastic comb. The use of a metal detector across the spoil from the trenches yielded the remains of a modern wire fence and a number of modern metal artefacts. Two modern water services crossed one of the trenches.
The testing revealed relatively undisturbed stratigraphy and nothing of archaeological significance.
