An assessment was carried out in advance of the construction of a proposed football pitch, training ground and associated site development works at Lisroyne, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon, in January 2007. The work was undertaken on behalf of Strokestown GAA and was conducted in response to a request for further information, which was issued due to the presence of a ringfort (RO023–165) within the immediate environs of the development and which would have been directly impacted upon by it. A decision to exclude the training ground from the development was made, in order to ensure the continued preservation of the monument in situ.
The remainder of the site was investigated by excavating test-trenches to the depth of the subsoil. This was undertaken using a mechanical excavator equipped with a toothless grading bucket. Eleven test-trenches were excavated as part of the assessment; no archaeological deposits or artefacts were identified during this excavation.
