Monitoring was undertaken in August 2007 of lakebed dredging associated with the construction of a concrete slipway and timber jetty on the eastern shoreline of Lough Meelagh, Keadue townland, Co. Roscommon. The assessment area lies c. 80m from a crannog site on Loughend Island (RO004–004).
Monitoring was instigated following recommendations made as part of the assessment of the construction footprint undertaken by Niall Brady in June 2007, licence numbers 07D023, 07R099.
The proposed works included dredging to a depth of between 0.75–1.25m within a footprint that measures c. 30m in length and 2m in width; the construction of a slipway using a combination of pre-cast and poured concrete; and the driving of a series of timber posts into the lakebed to serve as a timber jetty.
The removal of all lakebed material was monitored. In addition, a visual inspection and metal-detection survey of the removed material was undertaken. No archaeological material or deposits were encountered.
