The site of Culliaghmore was excavated as part of the N6 Ballinasloe to Athlone national road scheme. Work was commissioned by Galway County Council and funded by the National Roads Authority.
The site consists of a burnt mound measuring 5m (north–south) by 7.7m and 0.1m in depth. Two troughs were discovered underlying the mound. One trough was circular with a diameter of 2.1m and a depth of 0.19m. Four fills were noted, one of which contained burnt animal bone. The second trough was subrectangular and measured 1.93m (north–south) by 1.3m and 0.28m in depth. It also contained four fills. To the south-east of this, and just beyond the limit of the mound, was another trough. This was subrectangular and measured 1.45m (north–south) by 1.05m and 0.3m in depth. To the south-west was an oval-shaped pit measuring 1.6m (north–south) by 1.05m and 0.2m in depth.
Post-excavation work is ongoing and any interpretations are preliminary.
