The site of the proposed development is located in the townland and within the village of Cortober, Co. Roscommon. It is located just outside the 17th-century walled town of Carrick-on-Shannon, and is within the zone of archaeological potential for a possible Plantation period castle site (RO011–150), of which no standing elements remain and the location of which is not marked on any historical maps. Two test-trenches were excavated by machine to the level of undisturbed natural. Both trenches measured 1m wide and were 20m long. The trenches were excavated to a depth of between 0.40m and 0.55m. There was no evidence of any archaeological activity.
