Pre-development testing took place of a site at Cloonown, Athlone, Co. Roscommon. The proposed development comprises the erection of a dwelling house and garage/fuel store and construction of a septic tank with wastewater treatment system. The proposed development is located inside the area of archaeological constraint for RO055–003. The test excavation was undertaken on 4 September 2007. Four trenches of varying lengths were excavated at regular intervals (broadly 5m apart) across the north and west of the site following the footprint of proposed construction. Evidence for the possible levelling of a vernacular structure on the site was uncovered at the deepest level of topsoil. No evidence for archaeological material or cultural layers pre-dating the 19th century was observed in any area of the proposed development site.
