Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed extension to Lynch’s Hotel, Main Street, Boyle, Co. Roscommon, on 15 and 16 October 2007. The site is located in the heart of the historic town centre and consists of a small yard located to the rear of the hotel. The narrow confines of the site dictated that a mini-excavator was retained to carry out the work. Testing comprised the excavation of three trenches along the line of the proposed new foundation. A concrete slab and rough grass formed the site surface prior to testing. These directly overlay a deposit of loosely compact dark-brown sandy clay with frequent stone and moderate inclusions of animal bone, oyster shell, charcoal and pieces of red brick. This garden-soil-type deposit varied from 0.3m in thickness at the south end of the site to 0.9m at the north end. It overlay loose light-brown sand with frequent inclusions of stone. No archaeological material was uncovered.
