Non-disturbance archaeological assessment took place of eleven waterways impacted on by the proposed N6 Ballinasloe to Athlone national road scheme. Work was commissioned by Galway County Council and funded by the National Roads Authority.
The waterways comprise: RC4 (Cross River), Monksland/Crannagh Beg townlands; RC6 (stream), Crannaghbeg/Ardnagawna townlands; RC12 (drainage ditch), Mihnaboy/Ardnagawna townlands; RC18 (stream), Mihnahoy/Taduff East townlands; RC24 (stream), Taduff West/Belrea townlands; RC29 (stream), Balrea/Ardkeenan; RC42 (stream), Ardkeenan/Dooghan townlands; RC51 (stream), Moore North/Toberiheen townlands; RC52 (stream), Ballydangan/Moore North townlands; RC59 (stream), Cloonulty/Rathpeak townlands.
Visual inspection and metal-detection survey was employed to assess the archaeological potential at each of the river/waterway crossing locations. A sizeable buffer zone was included, at each survey location, extending the survey a minimum of 30m either side of the road-take. No archaeologically significant deposits/structures were encountered as part of the assessment.
