Testing was carried out as part of an archaeological mitigation programme for the N6 Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway. The site was identified during testing undertaken by Tim Coughlan of IAC Ltd in July 2005 (A016/029). The site was excavated in April 2006. An excavation area measuring 20m by 15m was opened.
The site consisted of a burnt mound/fulacht fiadh. The burnt-mound material comprised an irregular oval-shaped spread consisting of 70–80% burnt stones. The burnt spread measured 4.44m long, 7.3m wide and 0.23m deep. A rectangular wood-lined trough was identified roughly centrally under the mound. The trough was 1.9m long, 1.2m wide and 0.3m deep. No finds were recovered during the excavation.
This work was funded by Westmeath County Council and the National Roads Authority.
Editor’s note: Although excavated during 2006, the report on this site arrived too late for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
