This site was located within Contract 4 (Navan–Kells and Kells bypass) of the M3 Clonee to North of Kells motorway scheme and was identified during testing carried out by Jo Ronayne (IAC Ltd) in 2004 (Excavations 2004, No. 1345, 04E0913). It was excavated between 26 February and 26 March 2007.
There were four burnt mounds, three of which were relatively intact and a fourth that was heavily truncated.
The western mound had been heavily disturbed by a large ditch and a field drain that truncated its east end. Two troughs were uncovered under this mound.
The burnt mound at the south part of the site appeared to be heavily disturbed, which possibly occurred when the adjacent N3 road was being constructed. The burnt-mound material appeared to be mixed with subsoil and then redeposited. There was no evidence of troughs or other features uncovered during this excavation.
To the north of this mound lay a third mound, which was the most intact of the four mounds on this site. It contained one collapsed and two small troughs. The small troughs were lined at the bottom with large flat stones. Evidence of burning was detected in both of the small troughs.
The fourth burnt mound was located in the east part of the site. This mound was also heavily truncated by field drains and was also prone to flooding. A deep trough was uncovered, as well as a small pit that was cut by a field drain.
This work was funded by Meath County Council and the National Roads Authority.
