This site was located within Contract 4 (Navan–Kells and Kells bypass) of the M3 Clonee to North of Kells motorway scheme and was identified during testing carried out by Shane Delaney (IAC Ltd) in 2004 (Excavations 2004, No. 1271, 04E0916). It was excavated between 8 and 26 January 2007 and consisted of two spreads of burnt-mound material (11m by 1m by 0.15m and 17m by 15m by 0.16m). It appeared that the main body of the spreads was probably located outside of the excavation area. The most significant features were two large waterholes that extended under the baulk and therefore outside of the excavation area. One small pit and two shallow, possibly truncated, troughs were also excavated. The site was truncated by ditches and furrows and also by tree-root activity. No finds were recovered from any of the features but it is presumed that the site dates to the Bronze Age, based on similar excavated sites.
This work was funded by Meath County Council and the National Roads Authority.
