This site was located within Contract 4 (Navan–Kells and Kells bypass) of the M3 Clonee to North of Kells motorway scheme and was identified during testing carried out by Shane Delaney (IAC Ltd) in 2004 (Excavations 2004, No. 1171, 04E0920). It was excavated between 18 and 22 September 2006 and consisted of a layer of burnt-mound material (charcoal-enriched soil and heat-shattered stone) deposited in a naturally occurring shallow oval depression (8.32m by 4m by 0.05m).
Approximately 10m to the north of the burnt-mound material was a smaller shallow depression which also contained burnt-mound material. It was irregular in plan and was 2.25m long, 0.8m wide and 0.1m deep. It is probable that this was just redeposited material that originated from the main mound. A single field drain was identified at the site and the only find recovered from the site was a piece of quartz.
This work was funded by Meath County Council and the National Roads Authority.

Editor’s note: Although excavated during 2006, the report on this site arrived too late for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
