This site was located within Contract 4 (Navan–Kells and Kells bypass) of the M3 Clonee to North of Kells motorway scheme and was identified during testing carried out by Jo Ronayne (IAC Ltd) in 2004 (Excavations 2004, No. 1245, 04E0925). It was excavated between 16 and 27 November 2006 and was defined by a localised area of surface burning associated with a number of small burnt pits (1.32m by 1.07m by 0.13m, 0.82m by 0.52m by 0.27m and 0.86m by 0.44m by 0.08m), including two possible hearths (0.82m by 0.76m by 0.32m and 1m by 0.84m by 0.3m) and two post-holes (0.2m by 0.16m by 0.8m and 0.17m by 0.14m by 0.07m). A narrow linear feature (35.5m by 0.13–0.7m by 0.35m) curved around the area of the burnt features and tapered out to the north. Two flint scrapers were found: one from the linear gully and the other from the surface of the natural soil. The evidence suggests that this site represents the truncated remains of a fulacht fiadh.
This work was funded by Meath County Council and the National Roads Authority.
Editor’s note: Although excavated during 2006, the report on this site arrived too late for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
