Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was carried out during 2007 on the M3 Clonee to North of Kells motorway scheme. This work represented the final phase of archaeological activity. During 2007 over 60% of the scheme’s length was stripped of topsoil by a combination of bulldozers, tracked excavators and scrapers. Only one archaeological site was identified and consisted of two pits in the townland of Garretstown. This site was resolved under separate licence (see No. 1318 below, E3565). The monitoring of the removal of the topsoil on the scheme provided a check on all the previous phases of activity (geophysics, testing and resolution) and the fact that only one small additional site was discovered highlights the success and accuracy of all of the previous assessment phases. Monitoring will continue throughout 2008.
