Monitoring was conducted between the towns of Westport (also including the town) and Castlebar, Co. Mayo, between July 2007 and May 2008. The proposed development (gas pipeline) was located within the zone of archaeological potential associated with MA078–016 (enclosure), MA078–023 (earthwork), MA088–009 (enclosure), MA088–013 (graveyard), MA088–020 (enclosure), MA088–022 (burial) and MA088–092 (mound). A single trench was dug to lay the pipe; it was 0.45–0.65m in width, 1–1.2m in depth and it was dug exclusively on public roads or on the verge at the side of the roads. No archaeological features were uncovered during these works.
