In October and November 2007 pre-development testing and monitoring were undertaken at the site of a proposed residential development at Knockaphunta on the outskirts of Castlebar. An enclosure site (MA078–024) is located to the north of the site while a possible linear feature had been identified in the course of an assessment. Seven trenches were excavated as part of the pre-development testing. Two trenches were excavated in the area of the possible linear feature while the others were concentrated in the area adjacent to the enclosure site. The testing and subsequent monitoring revealed no features of archaeological significance. The stratigraphy in all trenches excavated was similar and consisted of sod and topsoil overlying rock. Elsewhere on the site the stratigraphy varied, with boulder clay in the centre and peat in the south.
