A foreshore and intertidal archaeological and metal-detector survey was conducted in the vicinity of the proposed accommodation compound at Dorrary Point, Achill Island, Co. Mayo, in advance of a proposed bridge/harbour development project. No features or artefacts of archaeological significance were identified either in the coastal area or in the intertidal zone.
Numerous metal-detector targets proved to be modern debris. The area in the vicinity of the proposed compound has been subjected to the dumping of debris from both an adjacent builders’ yard and from vessels using this area. The seabed is covered with modern debris and exhibits damage from the heavy use of the harbour in this area. Non-archaeological stones and bedrock outcroppings dominate the site area.
