An assessment was undertaken on a greenfield site close to the Carrickmacross road, in the townland of Lisnawully, Dundalk, Co. Louth. The site is adjacent to the ‘Lis na Dara’ residential development currently under construction, and will form the next phase of this development. Archaeological excavation was carried out on the previous phases by Audrey Gahan for ACS Ltd in 2005 (Excavations 2006, No. 1359, 05E1043), after assessment in advance of development identified a number of areas of archaeological significance.
Assessment of the proposed new site, which is situated on higher ground to the west of the present residential development, identified two distinct concentrations of archaeological features and deposits. Seven test-trenches were mechanically excavated, roughly following the proposed development layout, with some modification due to overhead power lines and the undulating nature of the site. Of these seven trenches, six were found to contain features and/or deposits of archaeological interest.
The archaeology found during this assessment was tentatively identified as prehistoric settlement-related activity, with associated burial deposits. It was therefore recommended that excavation of these two areas be undertaken prior to development and that all groundworks in the remainder of the proposed development site be monitored.
