The archaeological work was to endeavour to observe and report on the dredging within Annagassan Harbour and report on any artefacts or features which may be encountered.
The dredging was undertaken with a shore-based long-reach hydraulic excavator. All dredged material was loaded on to a dump truck and taken to a pre-determined dump area immediately adjacent to the harbour for metal detection and observations.
All dredging occurred at mid-water tide and below. The monitoring archaeologist was in a position to observe the dredging and the survey work from appropriate locations close to the dredging work/survey work.
The two areas dredged were Area 1, next to the existing quay (40m by 60m), and Area 2, an approach area measuring 25m by 110m.
The dredging monitoring uncovered no features or artefacts of archaeological significance to date. The metal-detection aspect of the investigation/
monitoring is to be completed once the proposed dumpsite has been archaeologically tested and the material can be transported to the new location and spread for inspection.
