An underwater visual archaeological survey and metal-detector survey was conducted in the vicinity of the proposed Annagassan Harbour improvement scheme, Annagassan, on Dundalk Bay, Co. Louth, as part of the archaeological assessment of the area prior to any development. This also included the metal detecting and visual survey of the proposed dumpsites at Casey’s and on Goodman’s Island dumpsite.
No features or artefacts of archaeological significance were identified within the area of proposed dredging or were discernible in the proposed dumpsites upon visual inspection. Very few metal-detector targets were identified in the area to be dredged, all of which proved to be modern debris.
The area in the vicinity of the proposed dredging has been subjected to dredging activity in the recent past (1990s and 1950s) in the area of the proposed harbour dredging along the adjacent quayside and exhibits evidence of the dredging in this area.
Because of the sensitivity of the potential archaeology of this site area, monitoring of all excavations with the subsequent inspection and metal detecting of the excavated material is recommended at this site
