A programme of assessment and testing was carried out at the site of Caffrey’s Monumental Works, the former Edible Oils Ltd and Drogheda Chemical Manure Company on the Marsh Road, Drogheda, Co. Louth. The proposed development entails the construction of mixed retail, office, leisure, hotel and approximately 470 residential units.
Testing concluded that the site was not developed until the 19th century. Since then, the site evolved from ornamental gardens to an industrial use. The entire development area could not be tested; however, five test-trenches were excavated; these did not reveal the presence of any archaeological features or deposits.
Although the proposed development on the subject site is large, testing and assessment appeared to indicate that much of the area has previously been developed. These former developments appear to have impacted on and removed any archaeological material which may have been present.
