The site of the proposed development is in Tomiskey townland, Co. Longford. While there are no extant monuments in the vicinity of the site, this report was compiled in response to the developer’s knowledge that an assessment will be required due to the site’s proximity to an extensive, multi-period timber trackway excavated at Edercloon by Cathy Moore of CRDS in 2006 (Excavations 2006, No. 1315, E3313). The trackway was situated immediately south and east of the proposed development site on the far side of the existing N4 road. The area immediately east of the proposed development site, within the CPO line of the proposed bypass, was likewise tested by Cathy Moore in 2006. While a few pieces of worked wood were retrieved, the peat itself was very disturbed and there was no evidence of any structured archaeology.
There was no sign of any potential aboveground archaeological features during the initial field inspection. Nine trenches extensively tested the site in February 2007. All nine measured 1m wide with two measuring 200m long, two measuring 100m long and five measuring 80m in length. All of the trenches were excavated to a depth of between 0.4m and 3.05m. There was no evidence of any archaeological activity in ay of the trenches excavated.
