Testing was undertaken on the proposed site of a housing development and treatment plant at Athlacca South, Kilmallock, Co. Limerick. The proposed development area contains the site of a holy well, LI039–013 (though the location of the well is unknown), and extends slightly into the zone of archaeological potential for LI039–014(01) and 039–014(02), a church and graveyard. Twenty-three trenches were excavated on the footprint of the proposed development areas by a mechanical track excavator with a flat bucket. A number of features were uncovered and represented a variety of drainage systems in addition to evidence of land reclamation and the probable remnants of old field boundaries as shown on the first-edition OS map. The holy well was not located and there was found to be no direct impact on the church and graveyard. No finds or features of archaeological significance were uncovered during testing.
