An impact assessment of a proposed quarry development site at Annacotty, Co. Limerick, was undertaken. The assessment included a testing programme. The proposed development envisaged the extension of a quarry in order to extract crushed aggregates for the construction of the Limerick south ring road scheme. An earthwork (LI006–043) was recorded within the immediate vicinity of the site. A number of enclosures and other archaeological sites were located in the wider vicinity of the development.
A large tracked excavator fitted with a 2m-wide toothless bucket was employed to open four trenches within the proposed extraction area of the site, located with regard to the footprint of the proposed development and the monument. Trenches 1 and 2 (35m and 95m in length respectively) were positioned across the undulating topography in the north-western area of the proposed development. Trenches 3 and 4 (40m and 145m respectively) were located across the location of LI006–043, which was not evident during the field inspection of the site. The topography in the north-western area of the site and overhead electricity cables meant that deviations from the original trench layout were necessary. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during the testing programme.
